In the recent article by Jeff Atwood, XML: The Angle Bracket Tax, he raises some interesting points on XML and the hiding of data inside brackets. The best resource he pointed out was a list of XML alternatives.
Brian Goetz even mentions a problem of overusing the serializing of Java Objects using XML (it is mentioned in the middle of the document).
So, in conclusion, there are alternatives out there for my configuration file needs. Could what I need be found here?

I've never really had a problem with using XML for configuration based things. I personally (from the JAVA perspective) think it works nicely, although I do prefer the property file setup as it is about the simplest implementation ever in the world (although not as easy to read). But I die grass. XML is simple, yet organized, and parsers really aren't that hard to write or if you're somewhat lazy, find online. So I guess I don't see what the big hubbub is about the whole "don't use XML for configuration" stuff. Oh well. Rock faces! WHOOO!
Those are very fine points. I'd have to say I'll probably stick with XML and the properties file format when dealing with Java.
