Google fan boy?
So at work yesterday a coworker said I was a "Google fan boy". Having written a post about Google C++ software the night before I would have to agree that I am. This also made be think are we not all fan boys/girls of something? Every developer has to pick a baunch of tools to do anything. You need an OS, a language, an editor, a compiler, a version control system, and more. With all of these things comes a lot of chooses. It seems to me that I get one and in my mind decide it is better then the others. I would say Linux is the best OS and so on. To be happy with my chooic I find myself being like well Linux is best because of X, Y, and Z. It is not that I don't find some bad parts to all the things I use, but I have to tell myself at some level the one I am using is the best or else I would just send all my time looking for the best. When I do find one that is better I move to it and become its fan boy. If you not a fan boy of something you what are you?

It's a classic debate that has been raging for centuries. I can refer you to the classic mid-west American arguments of Ford vs. Chevy, or in general, Coca-Cola vs.Pepsi, democrat vs. republican, or back in the early '90s, Nintendo vs. Sega.
I would be hard-pressed to find a person that wasn't fanatical about something, that includes myself. It almost seems as if, in order to be human, you have to find something that you can throw your energy behind. I only hope that, when times get tough, what I chose to be fanatical about was worth it.
Getting back to topic, of all the people I've met, you are the biggest advocate of theirs I know. You even went so far as to send in a resume (I can't blame you on that one. Google employees get some of the greatest perks ever)
And despite all of that, you still didn't try out Google Lively.
Also, for those interested, these are things that Paul is currently or has been a fan boy of at one time:
- AMD
- nVidia
- Linux
- FDTD (I'm betting formerly on this one)
- bzr
- Johnny Cash
- truth
- freedom
- delicious, delicious cookies
I could go on, since one of the great things about Paul is his excitement for new discoveries, which is probably why he likes Google so much, because they do too.
Other companies actually kill off projects when it threatens the business they know and love. Xerox killed off the Alto when they realized it might threaten their copy business, Microsoft killed off many of their own attempts at an online Office suite (although they do make several billion dollars currently, so maybe it makes sense), and who could forget how General Motors purchased many streetcar systems in the '30s and '40s and then shut them down so that more people would be inclined to buy vehicles and ride buses?
...great. Now I'm hungry for cookies.
I think your comment is better then my post :)
I'm betting that I probably took way longer to type up my comment as well, so you need to divide the quality of the two posts by the time it took to write each.
You would find that my Qualities per Second (or qps) would be less than yours, so you still win. Why must I take hours on these things? I have no idea.
